A ground stop halts departures headed to the affected airport. Aircraft bound for it are held on the ground at their origin until the stop is lifted. It is the FAA's most severe traffic-management action short of a closure, typically issued for thunderstorms over the field, very low visibility, or acute congestion, and usually lasts under an hour at a time (though it may be extended).
A GDP slows the arrival rate rather than stopping it: flights to the affected airport are assigned later departure times at their origin, metering demand to what the airport can actually accept. GDPs are the workhorse response to sustained weather or capacity problems and often run for several hours, with average delays published by the FAA.
These report how far behind traffic actually is: average taxi-out or airborne-holding delays at the airport, usually as a range with a trend (increasing, decreasing, static). They frequently accompany a GDP or appear as weather builds before the FAA escalates to one.
The airport (or a runway complex significant enough to list) is closed to operations: from snow removal or a disabled aircraft to a security event. Closures are published with an effective window in the FAA feed and are rare at major airports.
Free-form NOTAM-style advisories cover everything else worth knowing: runway configuration changes, equipment outages, deicing operations, or special-event traffic procedures. They don't necessarily mean delays, but they explain conditions at the airport.
