How to play the carrier landing game
1. Read the recovery brief
Every level briefs a real US Navy carrier, its base recovery course (BRC), and the wind over the deck. Check the crosswind component and which side it's from — the ship steams into wind, but it never cancels all of it.
2. Fly the yellow centerline
The deck is a fraction the width of a runway, and the wind shoves you sideways all the way down. Feed in correction (arrow keys, A/D, or the joystick) to keep the yellow landing-area stripe under you. From 3★ up, watch for seagulls — a small pitch change dodges them; take one down an intake and the engine quits.
3. Time your touchdown for the 2-wire
Three arresting wires cross the deck just past the ramp — the whole trap zone sits in the first quarter of the deck, so there is no margin for floating. Hold ↓ to break the descent late and settle into the 2-wire window (the middle wire — full credit); flying it on without any break usually snags the 1-wire for half credit. Float too long and you miss all three.
4. Trap it — then prove it
Catch a wire, on centerline, with no side drift, and the LSO signs off. Miss all three and you're off the bow into the water — zero points, swimmers away. Enter your initials, hit the daily leaderboard, and send your trap to the group chat.
Scoring, explained — what makes a good trap
The score rewards exactly what a Landing Signal Officer grades: which wire you caught, lineup on the landing area, rate of descent, side-load, and whether the whole pass was stable or a rescue mission.

Hard failures are all a swim: settle short of the ramp, drift off the deck edge, or float past the 3-wire and off the bow — each is a crash worth exactly zero. There is no go-around credit on the boat.
Carrier landing technique, briefly
A carrier landing distills to three jobs the game reproduces: stay on glideslope, stay on lineup, and put the hook down in the wires.
Fly the ball.Real Navy pilots watch the IFLOLS — a stack of lights on the port side whose amber "meatball" rides high or low against a green datum row as you deviate from the 3.5° glideslope. Ball high, you're high; ball low, you're low — and a red low ball near the ramp is an emergency. The game's HUD glideslope scale plays the same role.
No flare. Unlike a runway landing, carrier jets fly a constant rate of descent right into the deck — a controlled crash by land standards, which is why naval landing gear is massively overbuilt. In the game you still manage pitch: breaking the descent a beat before touchdown moves your touchdown point aft toward the 2-wire; too much and you float past all three.
Wind over the deck.The ship steams to put wind down the angled deck — usually 25–30 knots of it — which slows your closure and softens the trap. But recovery courses are set for the whole cycle, seas permitting, so there's often a crosswind component left over. The wires.A tailhook trailing behind the jet snags one of the cross-deck pendants; below decks, arresting engines pay out cable against huge hydraulic rams, stopping 25 tons of jet in about two seconds and 300 feet. Is this a real carrier landing simulator?
No — it's a 20-second arcade challenge built around one real skill: holding centerline in a gusty wind and timing your touchdown to catch a wire. Real carrier geometry and realistic wind physics, deliberately simple controls. For the real thing you'll need about a decade and a set of gold wings.
How is the trap scored?
Each recovery is scored out of 10,000 in six parts: centerline accuracy (3,000), which arresting wire you catch (2,000 for the 2-wire, 1,000 for the 1 or 3), sink rate (2,000), alignment (1,000), approach stability (1,000), plus a wind bonus (up to 1,000). Missing all three wires, landing short of the ramp, or going over the deck edge is a crash — zero for the level. A daily run is five recoveries, so the leaderboard is out of 50,000.
Why is the 2-wire the target here? Real Navy pilots aim for the 3.
Real carriers have four arresting wires, and the 3-wire is the target because the 4-wire leaves no margin past it. This deck has three wires, so the middle wire — the 2 — is the one with safe margin on both sides. Same idea, one less pendant.
What happens if I miss all the wires?
On a real carrier you'd bolter: full power, fly off the angled deck, and come around again. This deck doesn't do bolters — the wires all sit in the first quarter of the deck, and floating past the 3-wire means you go off the bow into the water for zero points. Landing short of the ramp or drifting over the deck edge ends the same way. There is no partial credit for a swim.
Which carriers are in the game?
Seven real US Navy carriers: USS Nimitz (CVN-68), Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), Carl Vinson (CVN-70), Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71), Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), Ronald Reagan (CVN-76), and Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78). The daily run rotates through five of them, the same five for every player worldwide.
What's the Daily Challenge?
A five-recovery run: five carriers and winds, difficulty ramping from gentle (1★) to brutal (5★), the same for every player and resetting at 0000 Zulu. The weather ramps with it — clouds build on 4★, and 5★ adds rain, wind shear, and a cloud sitting right on final. Fly all five in one sitting for a grand total out of 50,000; consecutive sharp landings earn streak bonuses on top.
What are the seagulls?
Levels 3★ and up add a bird hazard: a lone gull crossing final on 3★ and 4★, and on 5★ a flock that ambushes you out of a cloud plus low birds skimming the water on both sides of the glide path. They're somewhere different on every attempt. Hit one with the windscreen and you fly the rest of the pass looking through the splat; take one down an intake and the engine quits — and a dead engine won't reach the deck. Real-world tie-in: gulls are among the most-struck birds in naval aviation, and most strikes happen exactly where you're flying.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes — the game goes fullscreen and gives you a joystick: left/right to steer, pull back to break the descent, push forward for nose down. No download, no signup.
How do Navy pilots actually land on a carrier?
They fly 'the ball' — an optical landing aid (the IFLOLS) that shows glideslope — down a 3.5° path to a deck that's moving away and heaving, aiming to snag the target wire with the tailhook, at full power in case they bolter. No flare: carrier jets fly a constant rate of descent right into the deck, which is why their landing gear is built like bridge girders. The education section below goes deeper.

The carriers are real US Navy ships (hull numbers and names); deck geometry, wire spacing, and recovery courses are simplified for play and are not naval data. Scenario winds are generated per difficulty band (daily scenarios are identical for all players); crosswind components use the same math as our crosswind calculator.
