Why HNL gets delayed

Honolulu is the outlier among the FAA's 30 busiest airports: the FAA did not issue a single ground stop or ground delay program for HNL in the 12 months to October 2026. The 20-year weather record explains it. Instrument conditions show up in roughly one hour in a thousand, there are about seven thunderstorm days a year, and the trade winds blow steadily from the northeast.

That does not mean every flight leaves on time. HNL posted 84.4% on-time departures in BTS data, among the best of the big airports, and more than half of all delay minutes (52%) were airline-caused, the category that covers things like maintenance, crews and aircraft swaps, rather than anything the airspace did.

If you are flying HNL: Delays here are about your airline, not the airport. The middle of the day is the soft spot: departures between noon and 6 PM ran about 80% on time, against 92% before 9 AM.

Written by the ATIS Alerts team from FAA Command Center advisories (October 2025 to October 2026), BTS airline on-time data (June 2025 to May 2026) and 20 years of hourly weather observations. Updated October 2026.
