Ground stops, explained

A ground stop is the FAA's bluntest traffic-management tool: aircraft bound for the affected airport are held on the ground at their departure point until the stop is lifted. Nothing new launches toward the airport. Traffic already airborne usually continues, holds, or diverts.

Why ground stops happen

  • Weather: the big one: thunderstorms over the field or the arrival fixes, snow and deicing backlogs, or low ceilings cutting the arrival rate below demand.
  • Volume: more arrivals scheduled than the airport can physically land per hour.
  • Staffing or equipment: a TRACON/tower staffing trigger or an outage (radar, ILS).
  • Events: a disabled aircraft on the runway, a security halt, a VIP movement.

How long do they last?

Ground stops are issued with a short program end time, often 30–90 minutes out, and then either lifted, extended, or converted into a ground delay program (a metered flow instead of a full halt). Treat the published end time as the FAA's current estimate, not a promise: a line of storms that stalls extends the stop with it.

What it means for you

Flying GA? A ground stop at a Bravo hub ripples outward: expect flow into satellite fields, full ramps, and clearance delays across the region. Riding the airlines?Your aircraft is probably sitting at its departure airport; the app's "delayed" usually resolves after the stop lifts, in waves.
