What’s on an FAA knowledge test?
Both the Private Pilot (PAR) and Instrument Rating (IRA) airplane knowledge tests are 60 multiple-choice questions with a 2.5-hour limit, and you need 70% — 42 of 60 — to pass. Questions are drawn from the FAA Airman Certification Standards (ACS), which map every knowledge area to a source in the free FAA handbooks and the regulations. Our practice tests mirror that format and weight topics roughly the way the real test does, so your score here is a fair read on your readiness.
What is the ACS?
The Airman Certification Standards replaced the old Practical Test Standards and tie each test item to a specific knowledge, skill, or risk-management element. Every question here is tagged to an ACS area and cites the handbook chapter or regulation it comes from — so a wrong answer teaches you where to read, not just that you missed it.

Are these the actual FAA test questions?
No. They are original, ACS-aligned practice questions written by our team to reinforce the same knowledge areas. We do not republish the FAA question bank or anyone else's.
How many questions are on the real FAA written test?
Both the Private Pilot and Instrument Rating knowledge tests are 60 questions with a 2.5-hour limit, administered by PSI at approved testing centers.
