Free FAA CFI Helicopter Practice Test
This is a free FAA CFI Helicopter practice test, a full 100 questions in the same format as the real Flight Instructor Helicopter (FRH) knowledge test, scored at the 70% pass mark. The FRH written is not the commercial test again with harder numbers: it asks the same material from the instructor's seat. Why does every new student chase the helicopter in a hover, and what do you change about where they look? How do you teach settling with power without settling into it? Which endorsements does your student need before solo, and which limits, like the 8-hours-in-24 rule, bind you rather than them? That is what these questions drill.

Sample CFI Helicopter practice test questions
A few examples of the 105 ACS-aligned questions in this bank: correct answer marked.
Before taking a student into a confined area, the instructor should teach a performance check confirming:
- A. that at least half fuel remains.
- B. that the helicopter can hover in ground effect at the departure airport.
- C. that power available supports hover out of ground effect (HOGE) at the area's density altitude and the helicopter's weight. ✓
- D. that the wind is calm at the destination.
Confined areas demand OGE performance: steep approaches, vertical departures, no ground cushion. A helicopter that hovers IGE but not OGE will settle exactly where there is no room to recover: run the HOGE numbers before committing.

The recovery from an uncommanded right yaw (LTE) that a student should learn is:
- A. close the throttle and enter autorotation immediately in every case.
- B. aft cyclic and maximum collective.
- C. full left pedal with forward cyclic to gain airspeed, reducing power if altitude permits. ✓
- D. full right pedal to fly with the yaw.
Pedal opposes the yaw, airspeed restores tail rotor effectiveness, and less power means less torque to fight. Autorotation is the last resort if the rotation cannot be stopped, not the first response to the first swing of the nose.

Loss of tail rotor effectiveness (LTE) in a counterclockwise-rotor helicopter presents as:
- A. an uncommanded, rapidly accelerating right yaw at low airspeed that is not caused by a mechanical failure. ✓
- B. a left yaw at cruise speed.
- C. a vertical vibration through the pedals.
- D. a mechanical failure of the tail rotor drive shaft.
LTE is aerodynamic, not mechanical: the tail rotor is working but cannot deliver the thrust the moment demands, typically below ETL with high power. Students who think 'tail rotor failure' apply the wrong emergency procedure.
Reference: FAA-H-8083-21B ch. 11; AC 90-95
Why is a degree of aft cyclic normally part of the autorotation entry from cruise flight?
- A. it reduces the rate of descent to zero.
- B. it compensates for the right yaw of the entry.
- C. it starts the landing flare early.
- D. it keeps the disc loaded so rotor RPM is preserved, and prevents the nose-low acceleration that follows the collective reduction. ✓
Dumping the collective at cruise speed unloads the rotor and drops the nose; RPM sags exactly when it is most needed. A measured aft cyclic input holds the load on the disc while the autorotation attitude is set.

Before a student pilot's solo cross-country flight in a helicopter, the instructor must provide:
- A. only a verbal authorization if the route is under 50 NM.
- B. an endorsement from a second instructor as a cross-check.
- C. a single endorsement covering all future cross-country flights.
- D. a one-time cross-country training endorsement plus a separate endorsement for each solo cross-country after reviewing that flight's planning. ✓
Two layers: the general endorsement certifying cross-country training, and the per-flight endorsement after reviewing the day's planning, weather, and route. The per-flight review is where the instructor catches the route through the TFR or the fuel plan that does not close.

About the CFI Helicopter written test
The Flight Instructor Helicopter knowledge test (FRH) is 100 multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 2.5 hours, administered by PSI at approved testing centers. You need 70%, 70 of 100, to pass, and the questions are drawn from the FAA Airman Certification Standards. Bring a valid photo ID and your instructor’s endorsement (or an approved equivalent), and plan to keep your test report. You’ll review any missed areas with your instructor before the practical test. Knowledge test results are valid for 24 calendar months.

Free FAA CFI Helicopter practice test FAQ
How many questions are on the FAA CFI Helicopter written test?
100 questions, with 2.5 hours to complete them. You need 70%, 70 correct, to pass. The official FAA test code is FRH.
Do I need to pass FOI before the CFI Helicopter written?
FOI is required unless you already hold a flight or ground instructor certificate, hold a valid teacher's certificate, or have taught at an accredited college or university. Both writtens must be passed before the practical test, in either order.
How is the FRH test different from the airplane CFI (FIA) test?
The endorsement and instructor rules overlap, but the teaching content is helicopter-specific: autorotations, hover work, slope operations, and the hazard set, settling with power, LTE, dynamic rollover, ground resonance and low-G mast bumping, taught rather than just defined.
What may a helicopter CFI teach?
A flight instructor with rotorcraft category and helicopter class ratings may give the training and endorsements for student, private and commercial pilot certificates and helicopter ratings, plus flight reviews and other recurrent training, but instrument training toward a rating requires an instrument-helicopter rating on the instructor certificate.
What is the 8-hours-in-24 rule?
A flight instructor may not conduct more than 8 hours of flight training in any 24-consecutive-hour period (14 CFR 61.195(a)). It is a fatigue rule, and it counts hours across all students combined.
Are these the actual FAA CFI Helicopter test questions?
No. They are original questions written against 14 CFR part 61, the Helicopter Flying Handbook (FAA-H-8083-21B) and the Aviation Instructor's Handbook. Every one is figure-free, so no FAA supplement is needed.
