Free FAA CFI Practice Test

This is a free FAA CFI practice test — a full 100 questions in the same format as the real Flight Instructor Airplane (FIA) knowledge test, scored at the 70% pass mark. The CFI written is not the private pilot test again with harder numbers: it tests the same material from the instructor's side. Which endorsement does this student need, and when does it expire? What actually causes a student to balloon the flare, and what do you say to fix it? Why is teaching stalls as an airspeed the most damaging thing you can install in a new pilot? That is what these questions drill.

Sample CFI practice test questions

A few examples of the 102 ACS-aligned questions in this bank — correct answer marked.

To give flight training in a multiengine airplane toward a certificate or rating, a flight instructor must —

  • A. hold only a commercial certificate with a multiengine rating.
  • B. hold a flight instructor certificate with a multiengine rating and meet the applicable pilot certificate and rating requirements.
  • C. hold an ATP certificate.
  • D. have logged 25 hours in the make and model.

The instructor rating has to match the training being given. 61.195 also requires the instructor to hold the pilot certificate and ratings appropriate to the aircraft — you cannot instruct in a category or class you are not rated to fly.

A student plans a flight beneath a shelf of a Class B airspace with an overcast at 2,500 feet. The instructor should point out that —

  • A. the ceiling is irrelevant provided visibility is 3 statute miles.
  • B. the airspace, cloud clearance, and terrain together may leave a very narrow band of legal and safe altitude.
  • C. flight is prohibited beneath a Class B shelf.
  • D. cloud clearance requirements do not apply beneath Class B.

This squeeze — airspace above, terrain and obstacles below, cloud clearance in between — is where VFR pilots end up scud running. Teaching the student to identify the squeeze during planning is more valuable than any single regulation.

Best glide speed changes with weight in that it —

  • A. decreases as weight decreases, and so does the glide ratio.
  • B. increases as weight decreases.
  • C. is unaffected by weight, as is the glide ratio.
  • D. decreases as weight decreases, while the glide RATIO stays the same.

The angle of attack for L/DMAX does not change with weight, but the speed to fly it does. A lighter airplane glides the same distance, just slower and with a lower sink rate — a distinction worth drawing for students who assume lighter means farther.

Adverse yaw is best demonstrated to a student by —

  • A. rolling into a turn with the feet off the rudder pedals and having the student observe the nose swing the wrong way.
  • B. explaining the theory on the whiteboard only.
  • C. showing the effect during a power-off stall.
  • D. performing a skidding turn at low altitude.

Showing beats telling for a psychomotor concept — the student who has watched the nose yaw away from the turn understands why rudder is needed. The cause is the extra induced drag on the wing with the down-deflected aileron.

A student becomes lost on a solo cross-country. The procedure taught should be —

  • A. Land at the nearest open field.
  • B. Descend to identify landmarks, then continue.
  • C. Climb, Communicate, Confess, Comply.
  • D. Reverse course and fly the reciprocal heading.

Climbing improves both visibility and radio and navigation reception; confessing early gets ATC radar help while fuel remains. Instructors should say explicitly that asking for help carries no penalty — students delay because they fear one.

About the CFI Airplane written test

The Flight Instructor Airplane knowledge test (FIA) is 100 multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 2.5 hours, administered by PSI at approved testing centers. You need 70% — 70 of 100— to pass, and the questions are drawn from the FAA Airman Certification Standards. Bring a valid photo ID and your instructor’s endorsement (or an approved equivalent), and plan to keep your test report — you’ll review any missed areas with your instructor before the practical test. Knowledge test results are valid for 24 calendar months.

Free FAA CFI practice test FAQ

How many questions are on the FAA CFI written test?

100 questions, with 2.5 hours to complete them. You need 70% — 70 correct — to pass. The official FAA test code is FIA.

Do I need to pass FOI before the CFI written?

Both FOI and FIA must be passed before the CFI practical test, but they can be taken in either order. Most applicants take FOI first because its teaching theory underpins the CFI test.

Am I exempt from the FOI test?

Yes, if you already hold a flight or ground instructor certificate, hold a valid teacher's certificate, or have taught at an accredited college or university. Otherwise FOI is required.

What makes the CFI written different from the commercial written?

The perspective. Commercial asks whether you can fly the maneuver; CFI asks what your student will do wrong, why, and how you will correct it — plus the endorsement rules, which appear on no other test.

How long is a CFI certificate valid?

24 calendar months. It is renewed by a flight instructor refresher course, a practical test, an approved record of student pass rates, or service as a company check pilot. If it expires, reinstatement is by practical test only.

Are these the actual FAA CFI test questions?

No. They are original questions written against 14 CFR part 61, the Aviation Instructor's Handbook, the Airplane Flying Handbook and the PHAK. Every one is figure-free, so no FAA supplement is needed.
