Sample Sport Pilot practice test questions
A few examples of the 42 ACS-aligned questions in this bank — correct answer marked.
A sport pilot may not operate an aircraft at an altitude above —
- A. 12,500 feet MSL or 2,000 feet AGL, whichever is lower.
- B. 10,000 feet MSL or 2,000 feet AGL, whichever is higher. ✓
- C. 2,000 feet AGL under all circumstances.
- D. 10,000 feet MSL under all circumstances.
The limit is 10,000 feet MSL or 2,000 feet AGL, whichever is HIGHER. Over high terrain the 2,000 AGL figure is the one that helps you — above 8,000-foot terrain you may legally climb above 10,000 MSL to stay within 2,000 feet of the surface.

Under the current rules, what is the maximum stall speed, in the clean configuration (VS1), of an airplane a sport pilot may operate?
- A. 61 knots CAS.
- B. 59 knots CAS. ✓
- C. 45 knots CAS.
- D. There is no stall-speed limit.
Sport pilot eligibility is now performance-based: the airplane must have a VS1 of 59 KCAS or less at maximum certificated takeoff weight and the most critical CG. The old 45 KCAS figure was replaced by MOSAIC. (61 KCAS is the separate VS0 ceiling for certificating an aircraft in the light-sport category.)

To carry a passenger, a sport pilot must have made at least three takeoffs and three landings within the preceding —
- A. 90 days. ✓
- B. 12 calendar months.
- C. 6 calendar months.
- D. 24 calendar months.
Passenger-carrying recency is the same 90-day, three-takeoff-and-landing requirement that applies to every pilot, and it must be in the same category and class of aircraft.

A sport pilot wishes to fly an airplane with retractable landing gear and a controllable-pitch propeller. What is required?
- A. Nothing additional — those systems are covered by the sport pilot certificate.
- B. Training and a logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor for that equipment. ✓
- C. A private pilot certificate.
- D. A complex-airplane type rating.
Retractable gear and controllable-pitch propellers used to be off-limits to sport pilots entirely. They are now permitted after training and a one-time logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor.

A sport pilot may act as pilot in command at night only if the pilot holds a logbook endorsement for night operations and —
- A. holds at least a third-class medical certificate or qualifies under BasicMed. ✓
- B. remains within 25 nautical miles of the departure airport.
- C. uses a valid U.S. driver's license as medical eligibility.
- D. carries no passengers.
MOSAIC opened night flying to sport pilots, but a driver's license is no longer enough after dark: night operations require an FAA medical certificate or BasicMed qualification, plus the night training and endorsement.

About the Sport Pilot written test
The Sport Pilot Airplane knowledge test (SPA) is 40 multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 2 hours, administered by PSI at approved testing centers. You need 70% — 28 of 40— to pass, and the questions are drawn from the FAA Airman Certification Standards. Bring a valid photo ID and your instructor’s endorsement (or an approved equivalent), and plan to keep your test report — you’ll review any missed areas with your instructor before the practical test. Knowledge test results are valid for 24 calendar months.

Free FAA Sport Pilot practice test FAQ
How many questions are on the FAA sport pilot written test?
40 questions, with 2 hours to complete them. You need 70% — 28 correct — to pass.
What is the FAA test code for the sport pilot airplane exam?
SPA. You will see it on your PSI registration and on your test results.
Is this the real FAA sport pilot question bank?
No. These are original practice questions written against the ACS and the FAA handbooks to drill the same knowledge areas. We do not republish the FAA's questions or anyone else's.
Does this practice test include the MOSAIC rule changes?
Yes. Sport pilot privileges changed in October 2025 and the light-sport category rules in July 2026. There is no maximum takeoff weight any more, the stall speed limit is 59 KCAS, airplanes may have up to four seats, and night flight and retractable gear are available with endorsements. Older study guides still print the superseded numbers.
Do I need a medical certificate to fly as a sport pilot?
A valid U.S. driver's license works in place of an FAA medical for day operations, provided you comply with its restrictions and have never had an FAA medical denied, suspended, or revoked. Night flying additionally requires a medical certificate or BasicMed.
How is the sport pilot test different from the private pilot test?
It is shorter — 40 questions instead of 60 — and it concentrates on day VFR operations, light-sport aircraft limits, and sport pilot privileges rather than the full private pilot syllabus.
