For an unaugmented flight crew of two pilots, part 117 limits total flight time to —

  • A. 8 hours.
  • B. 14 hours.
  • C. 10 hours.
  • D. 9 hours.

Eight hours of flight time for one or two pilots. Augmenting the crew to three or four pilots raises the limit substantially. Flight time is distinct from the flight duty period, which includes report time and ground time.

A "cruise" clearance to an altitude —

  • A. is used only in oceanic airspace.
  • B. requires the pilot to maintain exactly the assigned altitude.
  • C. authorizes climbs but not descents without a further clearance.
  • D. authorizes the pilot to fly at any altitude from the minimum IFR altitude up to and including the assigned altitude, and to execute an approach at the destination.

A cruise clearance includes approach clearance to the destination airport. The catch is that once you report leaving an altitude in descent, you may not return to it without a new clearance.

The critical Mach number (MCRIT) of an airfoil is the free-stream Mach number at which —

  • A. the airplane can no longer be controlled.
  • B. the entire airfoil is in supersonic flow.
  • C. Mach buffet is first felt in the cockpit.
  • D. airflow over some point on the airfoil first reaches the speed of sound.

Flow accelerates over the wing's upper surface, so it reaches Mach 1 locally while the airplane is still subsonic. Beyond MCRIT a shock wave forms, drag rises sharply, and the shock-induced separation produces Mach buffet.

RNP 1 means the aircraft is able to maintain a lateral position within —

  • A. 1 nautical mile of the desired path at all times, with no monitoring requirement.
  • B. 1,000 feet of the desired path.
  • C. 1 nautical mile of the desired path for at least 95 percent of the flight time, with on-board performance monitoring and alerting.
  • D. 1 degree of the desired course.

The number is the containment value in nautical miles, at 95 percent. The distinguishing feature of RNP over plain RNAV is on-board performance monitoring and alerting — the system tells the crew when it can no longer meet the specification.

Clear air turbulence (CAT) is most likely to be encountered —

  • A. only within thunderstorm anvils.
  • B. near the jet stream core, particularly on the polar side and in sharply curved flow.
  • C. in the center of a high-pressure system at low altitude.
  • D. beneath a stratus deck in stable air.

CAT is wind shear turbulence, not convective, and it gives no visual warning. A change of flight level of a few thousand feet, or a track offset away from the core, is usually more effective than a speed change.

The Airline Transport Pilot Multiengine Airplane knowledge test (ATM) is 125 multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 3.5 hours, administered by PSI at approved testing centers. You need 70% — 88 of 125— to pass, and the questions are drawn from the FAA Airman Certification Standards. Bring a valid photo ID and your instructor’s endorsement (or an approved equivalent), and plan to keep your test report — you’ll review any missed areas with your instructor before the practical test. Knowledge test results are valid for 24 calendar months.

What is the FAA code for the ATP multiengine airplane test?

Do I need the ATP CTP before taking the ATM knowledge test?

Yes. The ATP Certification Training Program — at least 30 hours of academic instruction plus 10 hours in a flight simulation training device — is a prerequisite for the ATM knowledge test under 14 CFR 61.156.

What are the ATP experience requirements?

For an unrestricted ATP: age 23 and 1,500 hours total time, including 500 hours cross-country, 100 hours night, 75 hours instrument, and 250 hours pilot in command. Restricted-privileges ATPs are available at 21 with 750, 1,000, or 1,250 hours depending on a military or approved collegiate background.

Does this practice test cover part 117 flight and duty limits?

Yes — minimum rest, the 30-hours-free-in-168 rule, cumulative flight time limits, and how maximum flight duty period depends on report time and segment count.
