The engine governor fails in flight in a helicopter equipped with a manual throttle. The pilot should:

  • A. shut down the engine and autorotate.
  • B. cycle the governor switch until RPM stabilizes.
  • C. take over RPM control manually with the throttle, coordinating it with collective changes for the remainder of the flight.
  • D. ignore it, since the correlator will hold RPM exactly.

Governor-out flight is manual RPM management: every collective movement now needs a matching throttle input to hold NR in the green. It is trained precisely because the failure is flyable when the pilot stays ahead of it.

Cargo hooks are mounted close to the helicopter's center of gravity so that:

  • A. the load is always visible from the cockpit.
  • B. the load hangs behind the tail rotor.
  • C. picking up, carrying, and releasing the external load causes minimal change to the aircraft's CG and trim.
  • D. the hook can carry more than the maximum gross weight.

A load slung near the CG swings beneath the aircraft's balance point instead of pitching or rolling it, and a jettison changes weight without a violent trim change. It is why belly hooks live where they do.

A helicopter with a counterclockwise rotor begins an uncommanded rapid right yaw at low airspeed. The recovery is:

  • A. aft cyclic and maximum collective.
  • B. immediate autorotation in all cases.
  • C. right pedal to stop the rotation in the direction it is turning.
  • D. full left pedal with forward cyclic to increase airspeed, reducing collective if altitude permits.

Pedal opposite the yaw, airspeed to restore weathervane stability and tail rotor efficiency, and less torque if height allows. LTE recovery consumes altitude: recognizing the onset early is what makes the recovery survivable.

In Class G airspace at 1,200 feet AGL or below during the day, a helicopter may operate:

  • A. only with 3 statute miles visibility.
  • B. with no restrictions of any kind.
  • C. clear of clouds, if flown at a speed that allows adequate opportunity to see and avoid traffic and obstructions.
  • D. only with 1 statute mile visibility and 500 feet below clouds.

91.155(b) gives helicopters a clear-of-clouds standard in low-level Class G, conditioned on speed. It enables legitimate low-level work, but 'clear of clouds' at speed in poor visibility is where CFIT statistics come from.

Class D (human external cargo) operations require, among other things:

  • A. operations conducted over water only.
  • B. only a standard cargo hook and a second pilot.
  • C. an approved personnel lifting device and direct intercommunication among required crewmembers.
  • D. a part 135 certificate.

133.45(e) attaches special conditions to carrying people outside the aircraft: an FAA-approved personnel lifting device with an emergency release, direct intercom among crew, and rotorcraft performance requirements beyond the other classes.

The Commercial Pilot Helicopter knowledge test (CRH) is 100 multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 2.5 hours, administered by PSI at approved testing centers. You need 70%, 70 of 100, to pass, and the questions are drawn from the FAA Airman Certification Standards. Bring a valid photo ID and your instructor’s endorsement (or an approved equivalent), and plan to keep your test report. You’ll review any missed areas with your instructor before the practical test. Knowledge test results are valid for 24 calendar months.

How many questions are on the FAA commercial helicopter written test?

100 questions, with 2.5 hours to complete them under the current FAA Airman Knowledge Testing Matrix (older matrices allowed 3 hours). You need 70%, which is 70 correct, to pass. The FAA test code is CRH, and the minimum age to take the knowledge test is 16.

What jobs does the commercial helicopter certificate unlock?

The classic first rungs: air tours, aerial photography and survey, utility and external-load support, ferry flights, and ag support work, plus flight instruction once you add the CFI. Electronic news gathering, offshore, EMS and fire contracts typically come later; most of those operators hire around the 1,000-hour mark, and tour and instruction flying is how pilots climb that ladder.

How is the CRH different from the airplane commercial (CAX) written?

The regulations, airspace and weather overlap, but CRH swaps airplane systems and performance for rotorcraft material: the height-velocity diagram, settling with power, dynamic rollover, LTE, autorotations, and Part 133 external loads. One trap worth knowing: the 61.133 instrument-rating limitation on carrying passengers for hire beyond 50 NM or at night applies to airplane and powered-lift certificates, not helicopters.

I hold a fixed-wing commercial certificate. Do I retake a written to add helicopter?

Generally no. A pilot adding a rotorcraft-helicopter rating to an existing commercial certificate is an additional-rating applicant and is not normally required to take another knowledge test: the practical test covers the difference. This course still fits transition pilots, because the oral and checkride lean hard on exactly the helicopter-specific material here.

What are the Part 133 external-load classes?

Class A is a load fixed to the rotorcraft that cannot be jettisoned and does not extend below the landing gear; Class B is a jettisonable load lifted free of land or water; Class C is a jettisonable load that stays in contact with the surface, like towing; and Class D is a person, human external cargo, which carries its own rotorcraft and equipment requirements.

Are these the actual FAA CRH questions?

No. They are original questions written against the Helicopter Flying Handbook (FAA-H-8083-21B), 14 CFR parts 61, 91, 119, 133 and 137, and the AIM. Every one is figure-free.
