Free FAA Aircraft Dispatcher Practice Test

This is a free FAA Aircraft Dispatcher practice test: 80 questions in the same format as the real ADX knowledge test, scored at 70%. An aircraft dispatcher shares operational control with the captain at a part 121 airline. Every domestic flight needs both signatures, and the dispatcher plans the fuel, picks the alternates, watches the weather, and follows the flight until it lands. The written is widely considered ATP-level for good reason: it draws on the same part 121 rules, transport-airplane performance, and meteorology the ATP tests, then adds the dispatch fuel and release rules that only dispatchers are tested on. Expect the 1-2-3 rule, domestic and flag fuel, takeoff alternates, and the dispatcher's own duty limits.

In a TAF, a TEMPO group describes conditions expected to:

  • A. occur exactly once during the period indicated.
  • B. last less than an hour at a time and cover less than half of the period indicated.
  • C. become the prevailing conditions for the remainder of the forecast.
  • D. apply only between sunset and sunrise.

TEMPO means temporary fluctuations: generally less than an hour at a time and, in the aggregate, less than half the TEMPO period. A lasting change of prevailing conditions is carried by FM or BECMG groups instead.

For a two-engine transport airplane, the second segment of the takeoff flight path begins at gear retraction and requires a minimum climb gradient of:

  • A. 3.0 percent with all engines operating.
  • B. 1.2 percent with one engine inoperative.
  • C. 5.0 percent with one engine inoperative.
  • D. 2.4 percent with one engine inoperative.

Second segment, gear up, takeoff flaps, V2, one engine out, demands 2.4% for two-engine airplanes (2.7% for three, 3.0% for four). It is very often the limiting segment on hot days and at high elevations.

A Convective SIGMET is issued for:

  • A. isolated air-mass thunderstorms of any intensity.
  • B. forecast thunderstorms more than 12 hours in the future.
  • C. any cumulonimbus cloud reported by a pilot.
  • D. embedded thunderstorms, a line of thunderstorms, or thunderstorms producing hail of 3/4 inch or greater or tornadoes.

Convective SIGMET criteria include embedded storms, lines, significant areas of strong storms, tornadoes, and large hail, and any convective SIGMET implies severe or greater turbulence, severe icing, and low-level wind shear without stating them.

During a domestic part 121 flight, the aircraft dispatcher is responsible for:

  • A. obtaining all en route ATC clearances for the crew.
  • B. navigating the aircraft from the ground.
  • C. monitoring the progress of the flight and issuing information necessary for its safety.
  • D. computing the landing performance for each approach.

Under 121.533(b) the dispatcher monitors each flight's progress, issues necessary safety information, and cancels or redispatches a flight that cannot operate or continue as planned. Flying and ATC communication remain the crew's job.

The runways at the destination are forecast to be wet at the ETA. A turbojet airplane may be dispatched only if the effective runway length is at least:

  • A. the same length required for a dry runway.
  • B. 115 percent of the runway length required for a dry runway.
  • C. 130 percent of the runway length required for a dry runway.
  • D. 150 percent of the runway length required for a dry runway.

121.195(d) adds 15% on top of the dry-runway (60% rule) requirement when the runway is forecast wet or slippery at the ETA, unless the AFM provides approved wet-runway data showing otherwise.

The Aircraft Dispatcher knowledge test (ADX) is 80 multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 3.5 hours, administered by PSI at approved testing centers. You need 70%, 56 of 80, to pass, and the questions are drawn from the FAA Airman Certification Standards. Bring a valid photo ID and your instructor’s endorsement (or an approved equivalent), and plan to keep your test report. You’ll review any missed areas with your instructor before the practical test. Knowledge test results are valid for 24 calendar months.

How many questions are on the FAA Aircraft Dispatcher written test?

80 questions, with 3.5 hours to complete them. You need 70%, 56 correct, to pass. The FAA test code is ADX.

How old do I have to be to take the ADX test?

You may take the knowledge test at 21, but under 14 CFR 65.53 the aircraft dispatcher certificate itself cannot be issued until you are 23. Many students test early and finish the certificate later.

What experience do I need for the dispatcher certificate?

14 CFR 65.57 offers two routes: at least 2 years of qualifying operational experience within the preceding 3 years, or graduation from an FAA-approved aircraft dispatcher course. Most candidates take the approved-course route, typically several weeks of full-time study ending with the practical test.

What jobs does the aircraft dispatcher certificate open?

Dispatcher and flight-follower roles at part 121 airlines, passenger and cargo, plus operational control positions at charter operators, corporate flight departments, and airline operations centers. It is one of the few FAA certificates for an airline career entirely on the ground.

How does the ADX written compare to the ATP written?

They overlap heavily: part 121 regulations, transport airplane performance, weather, and crew limits. The ADX goes deeper on dispatch releases, fuel and alternate requirements, and the dispatcher's joint responsibility, and it skips the hands-on flying subjects. Most people rate the two tests at a similar difficulty.

Are these the actual FAA ADX questions?

No. They are original questions written against 14 CFR parts 65, 117 and 121, the AIM, AC 00-6B and AC 00-45H. Every one is figure-free.
