This is a free A&P Airframe practice test: 100 questions in the same format as the real Aviation Maintenance Technician Airframe (AMA) knowledge test, scored at 70%. The Airframe written covers the aircraft minus the engine. It asks you to identify a rivet by its head marking, set cable tension against a temperature chart, service an oleo strut in the right order, tell Skydrol seals from 5606 seals, explain what a mechanic with an airframe rating may and may not do on a static system test, and read what a missing red blowout disk on a fire bottle means. Every question is figure-free and carries an explanation and a current reference, so a miss teaches the rule instead of just costing a point.

If an annual inspection reveals the aircraft is unairworthy, the inspector must:

  • A. provide the owner a signed and dated list of the discrepancies.
  • B. repair the discrepancies before signing anything.
  • C. confiscate the airworthiness certificate.
  • D. notify the FAA within 24 hours.

14 CFR 43.11 requires the discrepancy list: the inspection is complete and logged, the aircraft just isn't approved for return to service. The owner may then have any appropriately rated person fix the items; the IA is not obligated to do the repairs.

A blocked fuel tank vent can cause:

  • A. an overly rich mixture at altitude.
  • B. fuel siphoning overboard in level flight.
  • C. fuel starvation and possible collapse of the tank as fuel is withdrawn.
  • D. no effect if the boost pump is on.

The vent keeps the tank at ambient pressure; block it and the pump pulls a vacuum that stops flow and can crush a bladder or thin-walled tank. A boost pump only deepens the vacuum: it does not fix the missing air.

On a hot day, the tension of the steel control cables in an aluminum airframe will:

  • A. stay the same; both expand equally.
  • B. decrease, because the pulleys expand.
  • C. decrease, because the cables expand and go slack.
  • D. increase, because the aluminum structure expands more than the steel cables.

Aluminum's coefficient of expansion is roughly double steel's, so the airframe grows faster than the cables running through it and pulls them tighter. The intuitive answer, hot cables go slack, ignores that the structure moves more.

When servicing an accumulator-equipped system, the correct order is:

  • A. order does not matter.
  • B. charge both simultaneously to balance the pressures.
  • C. charge the accumulator with nitrogen first, then service the hydraulic fluid.
  • D. service the fluid first, then charge the nitrogen.

With no preload, the accumulator fills with fluid; the reservoir then reads artificially low, and later gas charging pushes that fluid back and overflows the reservoir. Preload first, fluid second gives a true fluid quantity.

A shimmy damper on a nose gear:

  • A. keeps the nosewheel centered in flight.
  • B. prevents nosewheel steering past its limits.
  • C. absorbs landing impact loads.
  • D. hydraulically dampens rapid oscillation of the nosewheel about its pivot.

Shimmy is a rapid side-to-side oscillation; the damper is a small hydraulic snubber across the pivot. Centering cams handle in-flight centering, the oleo absorbs impact: each distractor names a different, real nose-gear component's job.

About the A&P Airframe written test

The Aviation Maintenance Technician Airframe knowledge test (AMA) is 100 multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 2 hours, administered by PSI at approved testing centers. You need 70%, 70 of 100, to pass, and the questions are drawn from the FAA Airman Certification Standards. Bring a valid photo ID and your instructor’s endorsement (or an approved equivalent), and plan to keep your test report. You’ll review any missed areas with your instructor before the practical test. Knowledge test results are valid for 24 calendar months.

How many questions are on the FAA Airframe (AMA) test?

100 questions, with 2 hours to complete them. You need 70% to pass, and the passing score rounds up, on a 100-question test that is 70 correct. The FAA test code is AMA.

Do I have to take General, Airframe and Powerplant in a certain order?

No. The FAA sets no order, though most applicants take General (AMG) first because its material underpins the other two. All of your prescribed tests must be passed within a 24-month window under 14 CFR 65.71.

What authorizes me to take the A&P written tests?

Graduation from an FAA-certificated Part 147 aviation maintenance technician school, or documented practical experience under 14 CFR 65.77: at least 18 months of experience for a single rating, or 30 months working on both airframes and powerplants for both ratings.

What comes after the written tests?

An oral and practical test for each rating, given by a Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME). The writtens must be passed first, and everything must fit inside the 24-month window.

Is there a minimum age for the AMA knowledge test?

The FAA testing matrix lists no minimum age for the mechanic writtens. The mechanic certificate itself requires that you be at least 18 and able to read, write, speak and understand English (14 CFR 65.71).

Are these the actual FAA questions?

No. They are original questions written against 14 CFR, the Airframe handbook FAA-H-8083-31B, and AC 43.13-1B. Every one is figure-free.
