This is a free FAA AGI practice test with 100 questions in the same format as the real Ground Instructor Advanced (AGI) knowledge test, scored at 70%. An advanced ground instructor can give ground training for any certificate or rating, teach the ground portion of any flight review, and endorse applicants for any knowledge test except the instrument rating written, which belongs to the IGI. The material is commercial-level aeronautical knowledge asked from the instructor's chair: load factor and maneuvering speed, constant-speed propellers and turbocharging, density altitude, weight and balance math, weather theory and services, airspace and navigation. Typical students are CFI candidates hedging their checkride timeline, career ground school and simulator instructors, and pilots who want to teach without flying.

Adverse yaw in a roll into a left turn is caused by:

  • A. greater parasite drag on the descending left wing.
  • B. propeller torque acting opposite the roll.
  • C. the vertical stabilizer overcorrecting the roll.
  • D. greater induced drag from the lowered aileron on the rising right wing, yawing the nose right.

The down-deflected aileron makes the rising wing produce more lift and therefore more induced drag, pulling the nose away from the turn. Coordinated rudder into the roll is the cure: the reason every turn starts with feet as well as hands.

Field elevation is 1,000 feet and the altimeter setting is 30.42. The pressure altitude is approximately:

  • A. 1,000 feet.
  • B. 1,500 feet.
  • C. 0 feet.
  • D. 500 feet.

Each inch of mercury is worth about 1,000 feet, and a setting above 29.92 means pressure altitude sits BELOW field elevation: 30.42 is 0.50 inch high, so subtract 500 feet. The sign of the correction is the whole question.

To best detect a dim object at night, a pilot should:

  • A. close one eye to sharpen the other's night vision.
  • B. stare directly at the object to focus the eye on it.
  • C. scan rapidly back and forth across the horizon.
  • D. look 5 to 10 degrees off center of the object, using peripheral vision.

The fovea at the center of vision is packed with cones, which are nearly blind in dim light; the rods that see at night live off-center. Staring straight at a faint light can make it vanish entirely: the demonstration that convinces every student.

Moist, stable air forced up a mountain slope typically produces:

  • A. cumuliform clouds with showery precipitation and turbulence.
  • B. thunderstorms embedded in haze.
  • C. clear skies with strong surface winds.
  • D. stratiform clouds with steady precipitation, smooth air, and poor visibility.

Stable air resists vertical motion, so lifting spreads it into layers rather than towers: stratiform cloud, steady rain, smooth rides, and poor visibility, because nothing stirs the haze out. Each trait follows from the resistance to convection.

Which operation may be conducted for compensation WITHOUT an air carrier or commercial operating certificate?

  • A. On-demand passenger charter between two cities.
  • B. Scheduled cargo service between two airports.
  • C. Banner towing.
  • D. Carrying paying passengers on a 100-mile air tour route.

Part 119.1(e) exempts a list of aerial-work operations: banner towing, crop dusting, flight instruction, aerial photography, and nonstop 91.147 sightseeing among them. Moving people or cargo from place to place is exactly what the exemptions do not cover.

About the Advanced Ground Instructor written test

The Ground Instructor Advanced knowledge test (AGI) is 100 multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 2.5 hours, administered by PSI at approved testing centers. You need 70%, 70 of 100, to pass, and the questions are drawn from the FAA Airman Certification Standards. Bring a valid photo ID and your instructor’s endorsement (or an approved equivalent), and plan to keep your test report. You’ll review any missed areas with your instructor before the practical test. Knowledge test results are valid for 24 calendar months.

How many questions are on the FAA AGI knowledge test?

100 questions, with 2.5 hours to complete them. You need 70%, 70 correct, to pass. The FAA test code is AGI, and the minimum age to take it is 16.

What is the difference between AGI, BGI, and IGI?

A basic ground instructor may give ground training and knowledge-test endorsements only at the sport, recreational, and private level. An advanced ground instructor may give them for any certificate or rating. Instrument ground training and the instrument knowledge-test endorsement require the instrument ground instructor (IGI) rating: even an AGI must add it separately.

Do I need the FOI test for the AGI?

Yes: the fundamentals of instructing (FOI) knowledge test is a separate test required for the ground instructor certificate, unless under 14 CFR 61.213 you already hold a flight or ground instructor certificate, hold a teacher's certificate authorizing teaching at the 7th grade or higher, or teach at an accredited college or university.

Does an AGI certificate expire?

No: the certificate is issued without an expiration date. To exercise its privileges, though, 14 CFR 61.217 requires that within the preceding 12 calendar months you served as a ground or flight instructor for at least 3 months, or received a proficiency endorsement from an authorized instructor.

Why do CFI candidates take the AGI?

The AGI covers much of the same commercial-level knowledge as the CFI writtens, and holding it means a candidate stuck waiting on a checkride date can already teach ground school and sign knowledge-test endorsements. It is also the standard credential for career ground school and simulator instructors.

Are these the actual FAA AGI questions?

No. They are original questions written against public-domain FAA sources: 14 CFR, the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, the Airplane Flying Handbook, the AIM, AC 00-6B and AC 61-107B. Every one is figure-free.
