Free FAA A&P General Practice Test

This is a free FAA A&P General practice test: 60 questions in the same format as the real Aviation Maintenance Technician General (AMG) knowledge test, scored at 70%. General is the shared core of the mechanic certificate: which work a plain A&P may sign for and which takes an inspection authorization, what belongs in a 43.9 entry versus a 43.11 inspection record, and where Form 337 goes after a major repair. Then come the shop fundamentals both ratings assume: Ohm's law and battery servicing, reading drawings, CG math after an equipment change, AN hardware and rivet codes, corrosion types, torque-wrench extensions, and safe fueling and ground handling. Every question includes a plain-English explanation and a current 14 CFR or handbook reference.

According to Charles's law, if the pressure on a gas is held constant and its temperature increases, its volume will:

  • A. increase only if the gas is compressed first.
  • B. decrease.
  • C. remain the same.
  • D. increase.

At constant pressure, volume is directly proportional to absolute temperature. Boyle's law is the constant-temperature counterpart, where pressure and volume vary inversely: the two get swapped constantly.

For an aircraft operated under part 91, a manufacturer's service bulletin is:

  • A. mandatory within the compliance time printed on the bulletin.
  • B. mandatory if the bulletin is labeled 'Alert'.
  • C. mandatory at the next annual inspection.
  • D. not mandatory unless an airworthiness directive or an airworthiness limitation makes compliance required.

Service bulletins are the manufacturer's recommendations. For a part 91 operator they become compulsory only when incorporated by an AD or contained in an FAA-approved airworthiness limitations section. The 'Alert' label signals urgency, not regulatory force.

A 24-volt source is connected across a 6-ohm resistor. The current in the circuit is:

  • A. 6 amperes.
  • B. 4 amperes.
  • C. 0.25 ampere.
  • D. 144 amperes.

Ohm's law: I = E ÷ R = 24 ÷ 6 = 4 A. The 144 figure comes from multiplying instead of dividing, and 0.25 from dividing the wrong direction.

A Type Certificate Data Sheet (TCDS) contains:

  • A. step-by-step repair procedures for the airframe.
  • B. the manufacturer's recommended inspection intervals.
  • C. the conditions and limitations of type certification, such as approved engines, fuel grades, and operating limitations.
  • D. the current airworthiness directive status for each serial number.

The TCDS is the formal description of the type design's certification basis: approved engine and propeller models, fuel, placards, CG range, and similar limits. AD status lives in the aircraft's own records, and repair procedures live in the maintenance manuals.

According to Kirchhoff's current law, the current flowing INTO a junction in a circuit:

  • A. is always greater than the current flowing out.
  • B. equals the source voltage divided by total power.
  • C. splits equally between all paths leaving the junction.
  • D. equals the total current flowing out of that junction.

Charge is conserved: current in equals current out at every junction. It does NOT split equally: each branch takes current in inverse proportion to its resistance, which is the plausible-sounding wrong answer.

About the A&P General written test

The Aviation Maintenance Technician General knowledge test (AMG) is 60 multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 2 hours, administered by PSI at approved testing centers. You need 70%, 42 of 60, to pass, and the questions are drawn from the FAA Airman Certification Standards. Bring a valid photo ID and your instructor’s endorsement (or an approved equivalent), and plan to keep your test report. You’ll review any missed areas with your instructor before the practical test. Knowledge test results are valid for 24 calendar months.

How many questions are on the FAA A&P General test?

60 questions, with 2 hours to complete them. You need 70% to pass, and the FAA rounds a passing score up to whole questions: on the AMG that works out to 42 correct. The FAA test code is AMG.

Is there a minimum age for the A&P General written?

The FAA Airman Knowledge Testing Matrix lists no minimum age for the Aviation Maintenance Technician tests. The mechanic certificate itself is a different matter: 14 CFR 65.71 requires you to be at least 18 before the certificate can be issued.

What does the AMG cover compared with Airframe and Powerplant?

General is the shared foundation: part 65 certificate rules, part 43 records, basic electricity, drawings, weight and balance, materials and hardware, corrosion, measurement, physics, and ground operations. The Airframe (AMA) and Powerplant (AMP) tests then go deep on their own systems: structures and flight controls on one side, engines and propellers on the other.

Do I have to take General first?

Most applicants do, and many part 147 schools sequence it that way, but the FAA does not mandate an order. What you do need before testing is authorization: graduation from an FAA-certificated aviation maintenance technician school, or documented practical experience under 14 CFR 65.77 (18 months per rating, or 30 months for both).

How long are my test results valid?

You must pass all of the prescribed tests for the certificate within a 24-month period, so a passing AMG score is usable toward the certificate for 24 months while you finish Airframe, Powerplant, and the oral and practical exams.

Are these the actual FAA questions?

No. The FAA no longer publishes its live question banks. These are original questions written from public-domain sources: 14 CFR parts 39, 43, 65 and 91, the FAA-H-8083-30B Aviation Maintenance Technician Handbook | General, and AC 43.13-1B. Every one is figure-free.
