Free FAA Helicopter Instrument Practice Test

This is a free FAA helicopter instrument practice test: 60 questions in the same format as the real Instrument Rating Helicopter (IRH) knowledge test, scored at 70%. Most instrument theory is shared with airplanes, but the IRH leans on the rules that change in a helicopter. IFR fuel reserves are 30 minutes at normal cruise, not 45. Helicopters fly Category A minima and may cut the published approach visibility in half, never below 1/4 SM or 1,200 RVR. COPTER procedures cap the final approach at 90 knots, and Point-in-Space approaches end with proceed visually or proceed VFR instructions that mean very different things. Inadvertent IMC, the rotorcraft killer, gets its own emphasis throughout: commit to the instruments, level the aircraft, climb.

Recovering from a nose-low, banked unusual attitude in a helicopter by reference to instruments, the correct order is:

  • A. raise the nose first, then level the aircraft and adjust power.
  • B. increase collective to arrest the descent, then roll level.
  • C. reduce collective, level the aircraft laterally with cyclic, then smoothly raise the nose to the level-flight attitude.
  • D. apply pedal to stop the turn, then correct pitch and power together.

Power back, level, then pitch: raising the nose while still banked only tightens the spiral and steepens the descent. Make the pitch change smoothly: abrupt cyclic at high airspeed risks overstressing the rotor system.

During straight-and-level instrument cruise in a helicopter, airspeed and altitude are normally controlled with:

  • A. cyclic for both airspeed and altitude.
  • B. collective for both, with cyclic used only for heading.
  • C. cyclic (pitch attitude) for airspeed, and collective pitch for altitude.
  • D. collective pitch for airspeed, and cyclic for altitude.

Pitch attitude sets airspeed and collective (power) holds altitude, and because a collective change also yaws and pitches the aircraft, every power adjustment needs coordinated pedal and cyclic. The reversed pairing is the trap.

The difference between a decision altitude (DA) and a minimum descent altitude (MDA) is that:

  • A. a DA is a decision point passed through momentarily during a missed approach, while an MDA is a floor that may not be crossed until the visual requirements are met.
  • B. a DA applies to circling approaches and an MDA to straight-in approaches.
  • C. an MDA provides vertical guidance and a DA does not.
  • D. they are interchangeable terms for the same altitude.

On a glidepath, the miss is decided at the DA and a momentary descent below it during the go-around is expected. An MDA is a hard floor: level off and hold it to the missed approach point unless the 91.175 conditions are satisfied.

Compared with airplanes, attitude instrument flying in most helicopters:

  • A. requires no scan changes; the technique transfers directly.
  • B. relies on the trim system to hold attitude while the pilot manages navigation.
  • C. is easier because slower approach speeds allow more time to interpret the instruments.
  • D. demands continuous attention because the helicopter is inherently less stable and cannot be trimmed for hands-off flight.

A trimmed airplane tends to return to its attitude; most helicopters diverge instead, so the cross-check can never pause. Force trim relieves control pressures but does not hold an attitude the way airplane trim does.

Selecting the alternate static source vented inside an unpressurized cabin will normally cause:

  • A. the altimeter and airspeed to read slightly high, and the VSI to show a momentary climb.
  • B. the altimeter and airspeed to read slightly low, and the VSI to show a momentary descent.
  • C. no change, since cabin pressure equals outside static pressure.
  • D. the airspeed to read high and the altimeter to read low.

Cabin pressure is slightly lower than outside static pressure, so the instruments interpret the switch as a small climb. Know the direction of the error before you need the source: the flight manual gives correction values.

The Instrument Rating Helicopter knowledge test (IRH) is 60 multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 2 hours, administered by PSI at approved testing centers. You need 70%, 42 of 60, to pass, and the questions are drawn from the FAA Airman Certification Standards. Bring a valid photo ID and your instructor’s endorsement (or an approved equivalent), and plan to keep your test report. You’ll review any missed areas with your instructor before the practical test. Knowledge test results are valid for 24 calendar months.

How many questions are on the FAA helicopter instrument written?

60 questions, with 2 hours to complete them under the current FAA Airman Knowledge Testing Matrix. You need 70%, which is 42 correct, to pass. The FAA test code is IRH, and the minimum age to take the knowledge test is 15.

How is the IRH test different from the airplane instrument (IRA) test?

The core instrument theory is the same, but the numbers move. The helicopter IFR fuel reserve is 30 minutes instead of 45, alternate weather minima are figured as 200 feet above the minimums for the approach to be flown, helicopters fly Category A minima and may halve the published visibility, and the test leans on COPTER procedures, Point-in-Space approaches and inadvertent IMC.

What is the helicopter IFR fuel requirement?

Enough fuel to fly to the first airport of intended landing, then to the alternate if one is required, and then for 30 minutes at normal cruising speed (14 CFR 91.167). Airplanes carry 45 minutes; the 30-minute figure is one of the most reliable helicopter questions on the test.

Can helicopters really use lower approach visibility minimums?

Yes. Under 14 CFR 97.3, a helicopter flying a conventional instrument approach may reduce the published Category A visibility by half, but never below 1/4 SM or 1,200 RVR, and not where the chart is annotated 'Visibility Reduction by Helicopters NA'. The DA or MDA is never reduced, and COPTER procedures are flown at their published minima.

Does an airplane instrument rating let me fly helicopters IFR?

No. Instrument ratings are category specific. A pilot who is instrument rated in airplanes must still complete the helicopter instrument training required by 14 CFR 61.65 and pass a practical test in a helicopter; whether the IRH knowledge test is also required depends on the ratings already held, so confirm the testing requirement for your path before scheduling.

No. They are original questions written against 14 CFR parts 61, 91 and 97, the AIM, the Instrument Flying Handbook, the Instrument Procedures Handbook and the Helicopter Flying Handbook. Every one is figure-free.
