This is a free FAA CFII practice test — 50 questions in the same format as the real Flight Instructor Instrument Airplane (FII) knowledge test, scored at 70%. Like the CFI written, it approaches instrument flying from the instructor's chair: which cross-check error is your student making and how do you name it for them, how do you introduce a partial panel so the student has to detect the failure, what exactly must be visible before anyone descends below a DA, and which currency and endorsement rules apply to you rather than to them.

Spatial disorientation is best countered by teaching the student to —
- A. look outside periodically to re-establish a horizon.
- B. establish and maintain an instrument cross-check and believe the instruments over bodily sensations. ✓
- C. focus exclusively on the attitude indicator.
- D. make control inputs slowly to reduce vestibular stimulation.
The vestibular system cannot be trained out of producing false sensations — only overruled. A disciplined scan also catches the failed instrument that a single-instrument fixation would follow into the ground.

Teaching automation management to an instrument student should include —
- A. using the autopilot for every approach to build consistency.
- B. when to reduce the level of automation, and the ability to fly the approach by hand if it fails. ✓

"What is it doing now?" is the signal to step down a level, not to reprogram while the aircraft flies away. A student who can only fly coupled approaches has a single point of failure.

On a non-precision approach without a suitable fix, the missed approach point is determined by —
- A. the radio altimeter reading 200 feet.
- B. the DME distance from the threshold.
- C. timing from the final approach fix at the aircraft's groundspeed. ✓

Timing, using groundspeed rather than indicated airspeed — a strong headwind puts the MAP later than the airspeed-based estimate. Students who start the clock late or use the wrong speed put the missed approach in the wrong place.

A safety pilot acting for a pilot flying under a view-limiting device must —
- A. hold an instrument rating.
- B. hold a commercial certificate.
- C. be a certificated flight instructor.
- D. hold at least a private pilot certificate with category and class ratings for the aircraft, and have adequate vision forward and to each side. ✓
Private certificate, appropriate category and class, and adequate vision. The aircraft also needs functioning dual controls. Note that if the safety pilot is the acting PIC, they must also be current and hold an appropriate medical.

Three degrees per second. A useful bank estimate is groundspeed divided by 10, plus 5 — about 20 degrees at 150 knots. Students should be taught the estimate so they can set bank before waiting for the turn coordinator.

About the CFII Airplane written test
The Flight Instructor Instrument Airplane knowledge test (FII) is 50 multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 2.5 hours, administered by PSI at approved testing centers. You need 70% — 35 of 50— to pass, and the questions are drawn from the FAA Airman Certification Standards. Bring a valid photo ID and your instructor’s endorsement (or an approved equivalent), and plan to keep your test report — you’ll review any missed areas with your instructor before the practical test. Knowledge test results are valid for 24 calendar months.

How many questions are on the FAA CFII written test?
50 questions, with 2.5 hours to complete them. You need 70% — 35 correct — to pass. The FAA test code is FII.
Do I need FOI for the CFII?
Only if you do not already hold a flight or ground instructor certificate. Most CFII applicants already hold a CFI, which satisfies the requirement — so FII is usually the only written needed.
How is the CFII written different from the instrument rating written?
The IRA test asks whether you can fly the procedure. The FII test asks how you will teach it — common scan errors and their causes, how to conduct simulated instrument flight legally and safely, and the instructor's own currency rules.
What is the 6-6-HIT rule?
To act as PIC under IFR you need, within the preceding 6 calendar months, six instrument approaches plus holding procedures and intercepting and tracking courses. Let it lapse and you get a 6-month grace period to regain it with a safety pilot; after that an instrument proficiency check is required.
Can a CFII give an instrument proficiency check?
Yes. An IPC may be given by an examiner, an authorized instructor, or another person approved by the Administrator, and it covers the areas of operation and tasks in the instrument rating ACS.
Are these the actual FAA CFII questions?
No. They are original questions written against 14 CFR parts 61 and 91, the Instrument Flying Handbook, the Instrument Procedures Handbook and the AIM. Every one is figure-free.
