By month
Delays follow the seasons: summer storms and winter weather hit different airports. Pick a month:
Frequently asked
- What counts as an on-time departure?
- The US Department of Transportation counts a flight as on time when it leaves the gate less than 15 minutes after its scheduled departure time. Cancelled and diverted flights are not counted as on time.
- Which month has the most flight delays in the US?
- In the last 12 months of data, July was the worst month nationally, with 71.4% of departures on time, and September was the best at 83.5%.
- Why are airports grouped by size?
- A hub with 300,000 departures a year deals with very different congestion than a regional airport, so each airport is ranked against airports of a similar size. Airports with fewer than 5,000 departures a year are not ranked.
- Does a low ranking mean I should avoid an airport?
- Not necessarily. These are historical averages. Leaving early in the day, picking the most reliable flight on your route, and checking FAA delays before you go matter more than the airport alone.
