Which Airports Are Ranked — Eligibility

• Public-use airport. Military and private-use fields are excluded from the public rankings.
• At least 10 complete years of observations within 2006–2025. A year counts as complete only when at least 90% of its hours carry an observation.
• At least 90% overall coverage across the station's reporting span — no long stretches of missing data.
• No unexplained multi-month gap in the record.
• Clean sensor data. Stations where implausible wind, visibility, ceiling, temperature, or pressure values exceed a small threshold are excluded.
• Runway data must be present for an airport to appear in crosswind rankings specifically.

The most common reasons a field you know isn't listed: its automated station came online after 2015 (so it lacks 10 complete years), it's a part-time or seasonal reporter with sparse coverage, it's a military installation, or its sensor record has too many implausible values to trust. In every case the airport is set aside with a specific, recorded reason rather than shown with shaky numbers.

Beyond the coverage bar, every observation is range-checked, duplicate and invalid-timestamp observations are removed, and record wind gusts are corroboration-checked before any “highest gust” figure is published. The full set of checks is described in the methodology.
